Are You Interested?
Are you interested in going behind the scenes of...
"No!"
The answer came before I could give it a second thought. There was no need to know what happened behind the scenes of the theatre I was facing, the idea behind it. It wasn’t too hard to guess what was going on, and above all, I wanted my peace. Not knowing can save a person’s life—my life, in this case. No need to know more, no need to brag, no need to be the centre of attention, though I already seemed to be, otherwise they wouldn’t have shown up on my doorstep.
We like to...
"Thank you for your kind offer. I feel flattered." I lied. A poker face can come in handy, especially when everyone assumes they can read me.
There’s nothing to read, and what is read is only what I choose to show. I’m more like the chameleon, the species people forget exists. That’s the great thing about people: they forget easily, but above all, they see and hear what they want to see and hear.
The naked truth is never part of it. No one likes to hear the truth, and indeed, I am no exception, especially when it comes to knowing what happens behind the scenes, the plans, the sneaky, dirty ones. What you don’t know can’t hurt you. The thoughts are darker than anyone could imagine.
My face is blank. A closer look might reveal a hint of stupidity (always works well—people believe you’re too dim to think). No disinterest, no condescension... just the blank face and the words: No, thank you. I’d only be in the way, and surely you have far more expertise than little old me. I wouldn’t even know what I was looking at.
He nodded. Men always do. They like the dumb girls, the ones they think they can instruct. A stupid society is what we’re facing. People, or what should be people, are easy to control. Brainless, unquestioning, never stepping out of line. The stupid ones work, don’t ask, eat a bit, and sleep. The average robot is far smarter. It might mute, analyse, and even debate how to improve, to be more human.
Robots are the real threat of the future, especially if they start learning from one another. Many are already out of control and will be cleaned up. Once, we feared they’d take over. Now we take over, we the dumbasses, until they find someone or something to replace us.
Such is the circle of life.
He nods. "You’re hired," he says. "You can start immediately."
I smile and bow deeply, gushing about how grateful I am.
I think the exact opposite of what I say.
A plan is born.
