You need to be a native speaker to understand what 'scrubbing her eyes' means.

Eyes are precious but who can see doesn't care much for the danger the eyes are put in.
Fake, coloured lenses, eye drops, gas, acid, injections, refusing to wear glasses and scrubbing like crazy 'cause of being exhausted, they feel itchy, dry or painful.
