No Surprise at All

The news I received today came as no real surprise, and I can only hope she has finally found peace. She endured an unbearably difficult life, as I was discussing with @emmabritt just recently. Let’s be clear: growing up in Dutch care homes and institutions is no picnic, and proper support is near impossible to come by.

This young girl’s story was no exception. To this day, we still don’t understand how a group of criminals and rapists—sanctioned by the Dutch government—were allowed to take in vulnerable young people. These so-called "carers" were handsomely paid while the children were exploited for drugs, molested, and raped by the very people meant to act as their guardians.

Things went terribly wrong for this girl, though she was far from the only one. Every cry for help, every police report, was ignored just like the countless times she attempted suicide while those around her stood by, laughing, refusing to intervene.

In the end, it all fell apart. Was it a surprise? Of course not. Any fool could see it coming, except, apparently, the Dutch care system, which dismisses every child’s word with a hefty pinch of salt, assuming they’re all liars.

Are only deranged adults allowed to work in youth care? You’d almost start to believe it.

After being failed at every turn, this girl returned home only for things to go wrong yet again. In another suicide attempt, she cut her wrists. When her father tried to stop her, she stabbed him in panic (yes, he died from his injuries and the cruel irony? She was a daddy’s girl through and through).

She herself called the ambulance for him. But for her? Straight to prison—never mind the repeated gang rapes by carers and fellow residents she’d been forced to live with.

Would she have survived prison? I doubt it.

Last Saturday, she ended her life. Frankly, it’s shocking she even had the means to do so in a place where everyone knew her history.

All that’s left to say is: Sleep well. Thank God you’re free of this sick world
