The Battle Of Grolle / De Slag Om Grolle ( 1627)
Groll (Grol- Grolle) today called Groelo relives the Battle of Grolle. It is a great event to experience for those who like to go back in time and see how people lived. The siege of the town Groenlo (Groll), on July 20, 1627, is re-enacted. The entire town (today the centre) is a big stage.
Groenlo is part of the municipality of Oost Gelre, located in the Achterhoek region in the province of Gelderland.
While a part of the States of the Netherlands experiences the Golden Age (mainly the rich) the rest fights against Spain and the plague.
Welcome in 1627

Death is part of life

Tent camps for the soldiers

The battle takes three days and for sure the experience is different if you can relive (in a tent) this period. I only visited for one day and at the time I left the war was't won.
The Battle

The presence of women on the battlefield is normal.

A lot of foreigners take part in the Battle of Grolle. Mercenaries were not uncommon at that time and they are not today. Not only Spain is present but also Italy, Germany, Belgium, England and many more to fight the battle and enjoy friendships afterwards (no corpses stay behind on the field).

The next 'Battle of Grolle' will take place in 2027. This is an anniversary year of the siege of the town (400 years). It is possible to travel with public transport but after 18:00 hours there might not drive a bus to where you have to travel to. In the nearest future this hopefully changes because of the new "Bommel Attraction Theme Park".

Incredible display of colors and costumes. It is evident how traditions of hundreds of years are celebrated in some countries.
This is one of the few towns not willing to give in to woke ideas and feelings of shame preached by social media about the past/history. Here you will also find Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet.
