Adulthood: The Scam We Never Saw Coming
Easter Day is one of the most remarkable day in the Christian community that signifies the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and this morning as I prepare for work, I could see kids from my window trooping to church with their new outfit and lovely shoes without any single worries and smiles all over their faces.
Definitely, after the church service, the parents are likely to take them out to any fancy restaurant or relatives houses to have some good time with their cousins and collect loads of tips from uncles and aunts especially on special days like this.
I believe every adult today were once in those shoes, were we didn’t have to bother about clothes, shelter or food including money. The only thing on our minds was just watching Cartoon Network and playing. But no one ever told us adulthood would be like this.
Grown ups back then always make adulthood look like fun, freedom and being your own boss!!
Is just one big fat LIES!
The only boss I know is my MD. I’ve to be at work today been Easter Day to check out the ATMs because I’m on duty.
Now I’m all grown up and all I understand is bills, stress and that awkward silence my phones get when I’m broke. Fun is even out of the equation.
During our teen years, you will hear adults advising us to dream big but none of them told us that the rent would expire before the dream even kick off.
My parents will always say “go to school, read your books and pass your exams in order to become someone in the future”
But guess what??
I don’t only have a B.sc degree, I’m also a masters degree holder but can’t afford to eat 3 square meals because there’s no job. Getting a good is by connections in Nigeria.
So, my certificates just lie idle in my lockers while I chase gigs, side hustles, and hope. Some people who studied to business management are now working as securities in order to survive.
Waking up as an adult is like an orchestra of responsibilities.
- Children school fees is waiting
- Landlord is knocking at your door for rent
- Light bill is due
- Data subscription is exhausted
- Your family and friends are buzzing your phone asking you for the money you promised them.
- Before the salary even lands in your account, activities has used it up
Adulthood is just one big fat scam
Some days ago, I and my friend, who in now a dad, were reminiscing our childhood days, when pocket money used to feel like salary.
When you cry of hunger and food will appear like manna from heaven.
But try that now as an adult, no one will care if you have money or have eaten. You’ll sleep hungry and dream of eating chicken. Next thing you know, you wake up biting your pillow with foam on your mouth.
And to make matters worse, your childhood friend will betray you for a morsel of meal.
Sleep is now luxury… because you have to stay awake not for fun or partying but overthinking, budgeting or working two to three jobs.
We make our own rules — and immediately regret them because the consequences are real and painful.
Is a jungle out there but yet we keep pushing forward, grinding and smiling through the chaos because deep down we have no choice than to survive this big scam called adulthood and one day when we become so successful in life, we’ll look back and say,
"Adulthood scammed me, but I scammed it back with resilience."
I honestly wish I couldn't relate to what you're saying, but the painful part is that I can relate to it all, like the WHOLE 9 YARDS 😂😂.
How did we get this deep into deception?
If I knew earlier enough, alaba or ochanga market would have known my name by now.
