Prior to the Muslim conquest, Rangamati was a battleground for Tripura and Arakan kings. In 1666 this region came under the occupation of the Mughals. In 1760-61, it was leased to the English East India Company. In 1737, a group named Sher Masta Khan received shelter from the Mughals. From then on, Chikmas and other indigenous peoples settled in this region. Other indigenous people include Bomb, Chak, Khumi, Khayang, Lusai, Md, Murang, Pannu, Santal, Manipurias.
