A week after the public call for a lack of COBOL developers, IBM and the Linux Foundation launched a COBOL developer mobilization project as part of the Open Mainframe project.

Three initiatives have been launched:

Currently, code is available on Github, and in May, in collaboration with Coursera, videos are coming.

IEEE already reports that developers, both retired and young, have already responded en masse to the call.

According to 2016 data, software at COBOL processes 95 percent of all ATM transactions, 80 percent of live transactions, and drives 43 percent of banking systems.
