Graduate Student Solves Decades-Old Conway Knot Problem

 

The solution was found by Lisa Piccirillo when she was a graduate student at the University of Texas.  The proof appeared in the Annals of Mathematics  in February.  Piccirillo is now a post-doctoral fellow at Brandeis University and her discovery earned her a tenure track position at MIT, beginning on July 1.

 

Short answer, the Conway Knot is not Slice.  See everipedia for a description of a slice knot.
