A common reason for strawberries drying out is a lack of moisture. These plants need regular watering, especially when they are forming new berries. If the soil dries out, the plant becomes stressed, which can cause the berries to shrivel and dry up.
Humidity also plays a key role. In hot, dry areas or during periods of high temperatures, moisture evaporates faster from the soil and plants. To prevent this, mulching the soil can help keep moisture in and protect the roots from drying out.
Poor soil nutrients can also slow down plant growth and weaken its health. When the soil lacks elements like potassium and nitrogen, the quality of the berries suffers.
Drying out can happen not just from not enough water, but also from a lack of nutrients. Diseases and infections are other major causes. For example, root rot often occurs when watering is wrong or there’s too much moisture. These diseases affect the roots, making it hard for the plant to get proper nutrition. As a result, the berries lose their juice and become dry.
Strawberries can also be harmed by fungal infections. These fungi spread quickly in high humidity and can block nutrients from reaching the fruit. It's important to protect the plants on time and check the leaves and roots regularly. If you see a white coating on the leaves, it might be powdery mildew.
This disease can spread across the whole plant and hurt the harvest. Fungal problems are worse during long periods of rain or when humidity stays high. To prevent these issues, treating the plants with fungicides and keeping the area clean is recommended.
Pests are another problem for strawberry plants. Small insects can damage leaves and flowers, which makes the berries dry out. Mites are especially harmful because they suck the juice from the plant. Regularly checking the plants and using special sprays can help stop them.
Some pests also attack the roots, making it harder for the plant to get water and nutrients. This leads to small, dry berries. Weevils can eat the buds and flowers too. Using insecticides and doing preventive treatments helps keep these pests away.
