The Smithy Shop is one of the most important sections of the Saidpur Railway Workshop. A lot of creative and skilled work takes place here, and through today’s post, I’d like to share some interesting details about this Smithy Shop.

A sample of parts manufactured at smithy shop |
Although the Smithy Shop is not very large in size, the tasks carried out here are highly significant. This is where various parts of Bangladesh Railway’s rolling stock are manufactured, repaired, heat-treated, and load-tested. To accomplish these tasks, the shop is equipped with different types of machines and processes. In most cases, parts are produced through hot or cold forging methods.

In hot forging, iron-based raw materials are heated to specific temperatures in a well-fired furnace, then shaped using electro-hydraulic or pneumatic hammers, or sometimes through oxy-cutting. I found this entire process very fascinating to observe.

The shop currently houses 79 different machines and plants. Many of them look quite old, but they are still being used effectively to carry out important tasks. When you see the samples of the parts made here, it becomes clear how skillfully the craftsmen shape them with such precision. Just by looking at those samples, you can truly appreciate the craftsmanship and expertise involved in their work.

Among the machines in this shop, I found the hammer especially fascinating. Its structure looked quite complex and its size was really massive. Apart from that, there are many other unique and unusual machines here. Below is a breakdown of the machines and plants currently in use in the Smithy Shop:
Machine / Plant | Quantity |
Hammer | 14 |

The Smithy Shop is extremely important for the Saidpur Railway Workshop. Many people don’t even realize how significant the work here truly is. At first glance, the structure of the shop may look like just an old, worn-out workplace, but in reality, this is where many essential railway components are produced.
I am inviting @lirvic, @mohammadfaisal & @ae-arfin to take part in the contest.
