The 10th of Muharram (Ashura): History, Significance, and Lessons.
Hello dear friends,
I hope you all are doing well and spending a beautiful life with your loved ones. I wish you all happiness and peace.
The first month of the Islamic calendar is Muharram. The tenth day of this month, known as Ashura, is a day of mourning, significance, and valuable lessons for the Muslim Ummah. One of the most important and tragic events in Islamic history took place on this day. Ashura is not just a date—it symbolizes sacrifice, courage, truth, and justice in the life of every Muslim.
The History of Ashura
Ashura is most closely associated with the tragic event of Karbala. On the 10th of Muharram in the year 61 AH, in the desert of Karbala in Iraq, Imam Hussain (RA)—the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)—along with his family members and companions, was brutally martyred while standing against injustice.
Imam Hussain (RA) took a firm stand against the oppression, injustice, and distortion of Islamic teachings under the tyrannical ruler Yazid. He became an eternal symbol of truth, justice, humanity, and unwavering faith in Allah.
The tragedy of Karbala teaches us that we must never compromise with injustice. We must stand for truth and justice, even if it costs our lives. We must never retreat from this path.
The Significance of Ashura
The importance of this day in Islamic history is not limited to Karbala. Many significant events involving previous Prophets also took place on this day:
On this day, Prophet Musa (AS) defeated Pharaoh and freed the Children of Israel.
Prophet Nuh (AS) and his ark were saved from the great flood.
Prophet Ibrahim (AS) was rescued from the fire.
The repentance of Prophet Adam (AS) was accepted.
Therefore, Ashura bears witness to many key events in the lives of the Prophets.
According to authentic Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to fast on this day and encouraged the Muslim Ummah to do the same. It is considered one of the most important Nafl (optional) fasts in Islam.
What Lessons Does Ashura Teach Us?
- Standing Firm for Truth and Justice: The greatest lesson from Imam Hussain's (RA) life is his uncompromising stand against injustice.
- Strong Faith in Allah: Holding on to faith in Allah even amidst hardship and adversity.
- The Greatness of Sacrifice: Upholding truth even at the cost of one's own life and loved ones.
- Opposing Oppression: The message of Karbala is that no matter how powerful oppression is, truth will ultimately prevail.
What Should We Do?
Fasting on the day of Ashura is highly recommended (Sunnah).
Give charity and help the needy.
Engage in extra worship, Quran recitation, and supplication (Dua).
Apply the lessons of Karbala in our daily lives.
Conclusion
The 10th of Muharram, or Ashura, is not just a date for Muslims—it is a reminder of humanity, sacrifice, patience, and the path of truth. On this day, we not only remember history but also renew our commitment to implement its lessons in our lives.
