Spas-Kamenny Island

For many years of working as a photojournalist in the Vologda region, I visited the island of Spas-Kamenny, which is located in Kubensky Lake, for the first time. I will not describe the history, I will only share my impressions.

I've been wanting to get here since I found out about this place, but I've only managed to go now. It was a folklore festival.

Expectations: a magical mystical place with a cosmic landscape all around.

Reality: bad luck with the weather... You need to go to Spas-Kamenny either in complete calm with beautiful clouds, or in a thunderstorm. It was the most unfortunate state of the sky and the water surface that I expected.

The place is really cosmic, as if you are on another planet.

It takes about forty minutes to get here by boat from the village of Ustye. By motorboat, I think it will be faster. There were years when you could drive here by car...but this is rare.

The island, measuring only 80 by 160 meters, seems large. I was expecting a smaller area.

I don't know how I would have told you about the monastery on the island in the lake without the colorful participants of the festival.

The photo essay turned out to be very good, but I didn't make any postcard views.

Even the famous sandbank that runs from the monastery to the shore was not visible.

In general, from the first time, the conditions for an interesting trip to the island became clear to me – this is the off-season.

It is very difficult to get here in spring, but in autumn there will be beauty.

Would I want to come here again? Yes rather than no.

I felt the potential of the place in terms of sensations and possible images.

I was just unlucky with the weather...Besides, I was burned in two hours on the island.

...There is a legend that you need to bring a stone with you to the island so that it does not disappear. I brought a few because I was planning (as a rock collector) to find something on the island and take it with me.
