Getaway to Gjirokastër, the stone town
Did you like the movie Back to the Future? Today I suggest you take a leap into the past, to the time of the knights. Let's go visit the small region of Gjirokastër in Albania.
The Gjirokastër region, in Albania, is a perfect destination for a family getaway, full of history, charm and discoveries. Located in southern Albania, this region is mainly known for its eponymous town, Gjirokastër, often nicknamed the "Stone Town", thanks to its gray stone houses which give it a unique and timeless character.
Arriving in Gjirokastër, it's like you're stepping into the past. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason: its cobbled streets, old multi-story Ottoman houses and imposing hilltop fortress create an almost magical atmosphere. Your kids will love exploring Gjirokastër Fortress, which offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding valley and is home to fascinating cannons and historical artifacts. It is also an opportunity to tell the youngest stories of knights and medieval fortresses.
Another asset of Gjirokastër is its old market. As a family, you can stroll through its narrow streets where you can find artisanal shops selling handmade objects: carpets, fabrics and jewelry. It’s the ideal place to bring back a little souvenir while discovering the local culture.
The Gjirokastër region is not limited to its historic town. Around, there are magnificent natural landscapes to discover with the family. A few kilometers from the city is the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a natural spring with crystal clear waters of a deep, almost unreal blue. It’s a perfect place for a picnic, a walk, and children will be delighted to see water so transparent that you can see fish swimming.
For families who enjoy hiking, the surrounding mountains offer stunning trails through forests, rivers and valleys. There are also picturesque villages to discover, such as Labova e Kryqit, with its traditional houses and its famous Byzantine church.
By visiting Gjirokastër, you also immerse yourself in Albanian history. It is the birthplace of the famous writer Ismail Kadaré and the former communist leader Enver Hoxha, whose family homes can be visited. Local museums tell the story of Albania, with child-friendly exhibits, making learning about the country's culture and history both fun and educational.
Finally, Gjirokastër's cuisine is a treat for the whole family. You can enjoy traditional Albanian dishes in family restaurants, such as qifqi (rice balls with herbs) or byrek (savory puffs). Something to delight the taste buds of young and old!
In summary, Gjirokastër is an ideal destination for a family adventure. Between its historical charm, its natural landscapes and its cultural discoveries, there is something for everyone. Whether you're looking for outdoor exploration or relaxing in a picturesque setting, this region of Albania promises unforgettable memories to share with family.
