I grew up afraid of my shadow. I don't know if you were too, but for it to follow me so precisely was a cause for alarm. Always too close for comfort

Later in life, I found out my shadow was afraid of darkness; it followed me wherever I went, but would stay away if it was dark. It will only come into the dark if I have a lamp at hand. It was afraid it would hide behind me as I held the light to clear the path.

My shadow should be my best friend, always quietly accompanying me. A shy one, who may also be afraid of light, always hides at the opposite end once light is shown. Most times it is alone but there are times it comes with friends. Some are darker than others, but all are following and doing as I do.

◉ When your shadow is illiterate, it's hostile.

You would fear your shadow, too, if you were told its do's and didn't. Try not to lose your shadow, else you may only have 12 months to breathe. Walking on another person's shadow spelt bad luck for both of you. You should be advised to keep your shadow at home if you are attending a funeral in China, as shadows must not get into the coffin.

◉ The educated shadow is friendly

While the unlettered shadow always conspires to kill you, an educated shadow will help you keep time around a shadow-stick in a sundial.
Such shadows have good manners, shading you on a harsh sunny day. And people will pay to be entertained by shadows at a shadow puppetry.

Conclusion and Invitation

As you grow in knowledge, wisdom and understanding, carve out some time to educate your shadow, so it stops hunting you and becomes useful. A smart artist will paint a shadow, the silhouette of a person; such civilised shadows have economic values.
