I think that the concept of Death Note is so unique and interesting, and that is one of the reasons why it got so popular in my humble opinion.

Yeah subtitles are always better because I did watch the two versions for the FMA 2003. And I can tell you that there are some differences, so some scenes do not convey exactly the same message and that can slightly change your perception of FMA whether you are watching the Japanese version or American version.
