“I know what it's like to tell yourself a lie so often that it becomes the truth.”
Everyone who knows me knows that I am a HUGE fan of Karen McManus (and have read all her books). This admiration began when I read One of Us is Lying, her debut and most celebrated YA mystery; the story about a high school murder.
A typical McManus murder mystery consists of fast-paced narration, multiple POVs and not to forget, loads of wittiness. She deals with so many characters in the same story yet somehow manages to radiate completely different personalities through them. Each character has his/her own identity and the reader experiences the events through each one’s eyes. Commendable!
One of Us is Lying is based on four POVs: four students, Nate, Bronwyn, Addy and Cooper, of Bayview High suspected of murder of their detention-mate, Simon, who dies due to his peanut allergy. Now, while on the surface it seemed like an unfortunate accident, it was eventually deduced that the four suspects each had skeletons in their closets, which Simon was about to reveal. This meant motive and any of them could be Simon’s murderer. But whose motivation was strong enough to kill him?
But, the story does not end here. This book is followed by its sequel, One of Us is Next, where there is another murder in the fate of Bayview High. With some same characters (but different POVs), we get to solve another spine-chilling mystery with Karen McManus. There is a copycat on loose who is playing a game of truth or dare with three students. The question is what the three will choose and what will their choices cost them?
