Abandoned Railway Wheels, Saidpur Railway Workshop
I am participating this contest, Contest! Map the Story on Steem Atlas #8. Thank you @miftahulrizky for organizing this beautiful contest.
In this publication, I’d like to share my experience of walking among the abandoned railway wheels in Saidpur Railway Workshop. There are countless old railway wheels scattered around the streets of the workshop. As I walked through them, it felt as if I was wandering through a forgotten part of the workshop, where time has stopped, leaving behind only these silent, abandoned wheels.

Wheels Rusting in Silence
These wheels have been lying here for years, slowly rusting away. Now they almost feel like a burden to the railway factory. I often wonder, why aren’t any efforts being made to make these abandoned railway wheels reusable? In my opinion, maybe these wheels could still be an asset if they could somehow be repaired or reused. But they’ve been abandoned here for so many days that it feels like no one is thinking about bringing them back to life again.
Why These Wheels Are Kept Here
Actually, I later found out some interesting information about why these railway wheels are kept here. A lot of coaches and wagons come to the railway workshop for repairs. Sometimes, the wheels of these coaches or wagons fail due to mechanical issues. After inspection, if the authorities decide that these wheels can no longer be used, they declare them as condemned.
Shop wheels vs condemned wheels
And the wheels that are kept inside the workshop are usually the ones waiting to be installed in coaches. The condemned wheels, on the other hand, are kept outside the workshop. Abandoned wheels are either lined up or stacked on top of each other along the roadside. These wheels are so heavy that even moving and storing them in one place must have taken a lot of time and effort.
What the Authority does with the wheels
But since they are no longer of any use to the railway, the authorities decided to arrange their sale. If you look at my pictures, you can easily understand how long these wheels have been lying beside the road and the way they’ve been stored there. Even when I visited the workshop earlier this year, I saw these wheels in the exact same place. It seems the authorities still haven’t been able to sell them.
Final Thoughts
It’s also true that if the government sold these wheels, I probably wouldn’t be able to walk among these massive pieces of metal like I can now. These wheels have probably traveled countless miles, carrying people and goods across the country. But now, they just sit here abandoned, almost like a display. In a way, I feel life is a lot like these wheels, we keep moving for a long time, but one day we also have to stop and make our final journey to an unknown world.
I am inviting @helengutier2, @lirvic & @ae-arfin to take part in the contest.
