Holy place #16 - "Doleshwar Hanafia Jame Masjid"
Steemian Friends,
Today, I will review a 150-year-old traditional mosque in our country's capital, Dhaka. The mosque was built in 1868 in a place called Doleshwar in Keraniganj, the capital of Dhaka. Initially, the mosque was known as the Pagla Mosque. Later, the mosque was renamed Doleshwar Hanafia Jame Masjid. People from different parts of our country come to see the historical mosque. The red brick mosque is a heritage of our country. The mosque was built during the Nawabi period of Bengal. Later, the mosque was renovated by successive generations.

The mosque received the Award of Merit in the 2021 Asia Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation, presented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Green afforestation has been done in front of the mosque. There is an arrangement for people to come from far away and sit in the shade under the trees in front of the mosque. The beauty of the area has been enhanced by the planting of various tree species in front of the mosque.
After entering the main gate of the mosque, there is a place for ablution on the right side. There are directions written in Bengali and English. There are rows of seats at the ablution place. Red bricks have been used all around the mosque. I first perform ablution to pray. Then I see a marked direction to enter the mosque.
The mosque has two buildings. An old building where the school and the Arabic education system are currently located. A new building has been constructed, similar to the old mosque. I go to the new mosque building to pray. The new mosque building is surrounded by glass. The entrance doors are made of white, high-quality glass. The entrance doors to the mosque are massive.
Beautiful view inside the mosque
I enter the mosque and pray first. Then I go to the front of the mosque and go to the place where the Imam prays. The entire mosque is made of red bricks. The mosque features a high ceiling, and its glass walls allow light and air from outside to enter. The mosque is reinforced with numerous pillars inside. There is a digital clock inside the mosque, and prayer times are given.
Greenery in front of the mosque
After coming out of the mosque, I see the surroundings are clean and tidy. There are trees planted on the walls next to the mosque. There are lights around the mosque which enhance the beauty of the mosque in the evening. There are banners written in Bengali and English about the history of the mosque. I can learn the history of the mosque from the banner. A man sits in front of the mosque, serving tourists.
A picture of me after prayers at the mosque.
There is a lot of cleanliness and greenery around the mosque. There is a separate place next to the mosque for ablution and observing Islamic rules. I have shown the other facilities of the mosque through pictures below.
