saving an angel

I made this painting in 2023, a few months after arriving in Catalonia. The most interesting thing is the story behind it. That summer day it was unbearably hot and, as usually happens, the trains were delayed for some reason. The number of people waiting on the platform barely allowed the trains to run.

At one point we began to hear the desperate screams of a woman. Within a few minutes we all learned that the reason for her state of nerves was because her son had disappeared from her side.

The little boy was three years old and seemed to have vanished at a moment when she lost sight of him. Usually, if this happens on the beach, people start clapping because that is the way to communicate that there is a missing child, but in this situation it didn't make much sense because we could barely move because we were so crowded. The next few minutes seemed like an eternity.

Nobody knew what to do but look down. Someone shouted ‘nobody move’ ‘silence’ fortunately we all collaborated with this silence, even those on the platform in front of us. All could see how some of them were trying to crouch down and try to catch sight of the little boy.

Suddenly, as if by magic, from the escalators we began to hear, at first almost imperceptibly and then more and more distinctly, a very sweet voice singing ‘choo choo choo choo’. Then we heard applause and cheering. When the trains arrived and we boarded, we heard from passengers who were closer to the entrance and witnessed everything, that the little boy had gone to the escalators and a guard found him. He came down with him in his arms and handed him to his mother.

The funniest thing was that before the mother could see him, the little boy pointed his finger at her, showing the guard who his mother was. It was a touching anecdote at the time and inspired me to create an image related to the angelic.

This goes beyond believing or not believing in angels and celestial beings. It has to do with a sensation, one of those that you feel in your gut and that always moves you.
