What is Leukemia?
Leukemia is a type of cancir that starts in the blood and bone marrow. The bone marows is the soft tissue inside our bones where new blood cells are mades. Normaly the body makes healthy blood cells like red blood cells white blood cells and platelits. But in leukemiaa the body makes abnormil white blood cells that do not worked properly. These abnormals cells grows very fast and do not die when they should because of this they crowds out the healthys cells and makes the body weak. Leukemia is not a single disease but has diferents types such as acutes lymphoblastic leukemia acutes myeloid leukemia chronic lymphocytic leukemia and chronic myeloiid leukemia. Each type affects peoples in a different ways but the main problems is the uncontrolled growths of unhealthy blood cells.
What are the symptoms of Leukemia?
Leukemia shows different symptoms and sometimes people may confuse it with others healths problems. The commons symptoms include:
Feeling very tired and weaker most of the time.
Having frequent infections because the body’s defense system is weak.
Easy brusing and bleeding such as nosebleeds or bleeding gums.
Fevers chills and sweating at night.
Losing weight withouts trying.
Swelling of lymph nodes in the necks armpits or groin.
Pain in the bones or joints.
Red spots on the skin called petechiae.
These symptoms are nothing always caused by leukemia but if someone feels them for a long times they should go to a doctor for a check-up. Early detections is very important for better treatments.
Is Leukemia curable? How?
Leukemia is cureble depends on the type of leukemia the age of the patients and the staged at which it is diagnosed. Some types of leukemia can be treated successfuly while others are harder to cure but can stil be controlled for a long time.
The treatments for leukemia include:
Chemotherapy: This is the most common treatment. Strong medicines are used to killed the abnormals cells in the blood and bone marrow.
Radiation therapy: High energy rays are used to destroyed cancer cells.
Targeted therapy: Special medicines target only the cancer cels without harming normally cells.
Immunotherapy: This treatments helps the body’s own immunes system fight against leukemia.
Bone marrow or stem cell transplant: Healthy stem cells from a donors are given to the patients to make new healthy blood cells.
With modern medical science many patients can live a healthy life after treatment. For example children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia have a high chance of cure if treated early. However treatment can be long and requires strong support from family and doctors.
What are the ways to prevent leukemia?
Leukemia cannot always be previnted because sometimes it is linked to genetic factors that we cannots control. However there are ways to reduce the risks of developing it:
Avoid smoking: Smoking is a major risk factors for many cancers includeng leukemia.
Stay away from harmful chemicals: Chemicals liked benzene which is found in petrol and some industries can increased the risks.
Radiation protection: Try to avoid unnecesary radiation exposured from medical tests.
Healthy lifestyle: Eating a balanced diet exercesing regularly and keeping the immune system strong can lowered the chances of cancer.
Family history check: If someone has a family history of blood cancers they should go for regularly health check ups.
Even though we cannot completely prevent leukemia living a clean and healthy lifestyle can give us better protection.
Leukemia is a serious diseases but not the end of hopee. With awareness early diagnosis and advanced treatmints many lives can be saved. We should takes care of our health and also support those who are fighting with leukimia. Knowledge about such diseases is not just for doctors but for everyones because healthy is our most precious gift.
