A little history
The name of this street is due to Pedro Chacón y Morales, a merchant who in 1817 had a flags store on the street "crossed by the company", located precisely on the corner of Paseo Huerfanos, this character was the grandfather of Arturo Prat Therefore, in this part of the center, a Chilean flag was raised every time there was a victory for the independence forces, so that little by little the street was transformed into "flag street"
With the passing of the years the well-known "Chinatown" spread along the flag street, housing the literary bohemian movement of Chile, at the time having several bars, restaurants very frequented by characters such as Pablo Neruda, and many other poets and artists from The time.
What is near the Bandera walk?
Currently there are important financial and business buildings, since 2018 it became a pedestrian promenade, it should be noted, from the underpass of the mall to the north, if we pay great attention we can see historical buildings such as the union club, built in the corner of the flag street for the year 1917 by the architect Alberto Cruz Montt, we can see the Santiago Stock Exchange, with a Neoclassical style work of the architect Emilie Jecquier, the pre-Columbian art museum located in the same building as the which was the customs house, located between Bandera and Compañía street one block from the Plaza de Armas, the courthouse between Bandera and Morande and the building of the former National Congress, built in 1876.
