“Sounds solid.” Tom also smiled with the idea of letting Gordon die.
They were stationed just behind the corner of a building in the back of the palace and waiting for the bell ring. The streets were near empty of civilians, none of which were carrying a gun, and the sun’s position was in their favor – it was shining right in the eyes of the guards at the back of the palace, blinding them both from above as well as from below thanks to the pebbles being as white as chalk itself. They weren’t nervous, not at all. They were patiently waiting for the clock to mark the time, wishing for a cigarette or two that they didn’t have.
The first ring of the bell marked 5 p.m. They knew that was the time Gordon stepped out of the shade and approached the palace to make the delivery. If they would react too hastily, they could ruin everything. They needed to wait for an appropriate moment. They both counted the seconds and played the entire scene inside their heads – how long Gordon needed to reach the entrance on his horse, what he spoke with the guards, and when he let go of the jar. They reached 24 seconds when they looked at each other and knew then was the time to go make history happen.
