Speak On Steem: Steem DAO Proposal & BETA version released

After several months of careful planning, I am pleased to finally present my proposal, which aims to launch a media-sharing platform built on the Steem blockchain under the name SPEEM. The platform will introduce several key features designed to support user onboarding and promote the broader adoption of Steem.

This proposal is informed by lessons from the past. Throughout Steem’s history, several projects have attempted to create similar platforms but ultimately faded for various reasons. D.Tube, for example, began as a promising decentralized video-sharing project but is now completely abandoned. Likewise, DLive, a live-streaming service once integrated with Steem, was short-lived and is no longer part of the ecosystem. Other Steem-based projects such as Vimm.tv and View.ly also tried their chances, but unfortunately met the same fate.

These outcomes underscore the need for a more sustainable and community-aligned approach. My own strategy is rooted in a deep understanding of the Steem community. Through my involvement in numerous community-driven events, cross-community collaboration, and large-scale curation management, I have seen firsthand that there is a solid base of users who are genuinely interested in sharing video content. Unfortunately, in the absence of a dedicated platform, much of this content ends up buried within traditional blog posts and lacks proper visibility or long-term impact.

Moreover, the Steem ecosystem must evolve to accommodate users who are not primarily blog-focused. This makes it essential to support vlogging as a legitimate and valued form of content creation. By doing so, we can empower a broader range of users to participate in the platform, free from the constraints of the current definition of what constitutes a “quality contribution.” SPEEM is envisioned as a platform that bridges this gap, fostering creativity, diversity, and engagement in a way that aligns with the community’s evolving needs.

Development

To support the creation and successful launch of SPEEM, a media-sharing platform built on the Steem blockchain, development will be structured into three major stages. Each stage focuses on delivering functional, community-driven features that enhance onboarding, content sharing, and monetization opportunities.

Technical Stack:

To ensure a flexible, performant, and future-proof architecture, I decided to go with the following core technologies:

• Linux (Ubuntu/Debian).

Economic model

Twenty percent of all revenue generated by SPEEM with paid features will be allocated to permanently burn STEEM. This mechanism is intended to reduce the circulating supply of the token over time, contributing to long-term value creation and economic sustainability. In addition, all paid features on SPEEM will accept STEEM as a payment method, alongside debit and credit card options, ensuring accessibility for both crypto-native users and individuals entering from outside the Steem ecosystem.

To maintain long-term sustainability, it is essential to avoid relying exclusively on the reward pool, as it is a finite and fluctuating resource. Alternative revenue streams such as subscriptions, cosmetic enhancements, and other paid features should be incorporated to provide consistent support for the platform and its contributors. The platform’s ability to thrive will depend largely on its capacity to diversify its revenue model beyond the reward pool, underscoring the importance of building scalable and resilient sources of income.

Will the project be open source?

Yes, the project will be released as open-source software under the MIT License. This approach ensures transparency, fosters collaboration, and allows the community to build upon and maintain the project independently. This is especially important given past experiences on Steem, where several projects received substantial funding from the DAO but later migrated to Hive. Because these projects were closed-source, the Steem community was left with nothing to build on, effectively funding platforms that could not be replicated or continued. By remaining open-source, SPEEM avoids this pitfall and reinforces its long-term commitment to the Steem ecosystem.

Outreach and promotion

Customer and user acquisition is widely recognized as one of the most challenging aspects of building any online platform. According to available data on Average Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), which represents the average amount of money a company spends to acquire a new customer, the range can be extremely broad. It may start as low as one dollar and extend to over one thousand dollars depending on the industry, target audience, and marketing approach. This wide variation highlights the importance of developing creative and cost-effective acquisition strategies, especially in competitive digital environments.

To attract new users, I plan to utilize promotional videos that present the platform as a solution for content creators who wish to monetize their work without the need for a large follower count or high view metrics. This messaging directly appeals to independent creators seeking alternative revenue opportunities.

In addition, I intend to engage potential investors through live events and interactive presentations. By implementing a system similar to those used by established streaming platforms, where users have the ability to support creators by sending gifts, we can introduce a new stream of income. These gifts could be purchased using STEEM or through conventional credit and debit card payments, with a system in place to repurchase STEEM. Furthermore, access to “free gifts” could be granted to users who delegate Steem Power or contribute in meaningful ways.

To further encourage platform activity, authors will be rewarded through a gamification system. This system will assign points, badges, or other recognition for meaningful actions such as posting high-quality content, engaging with the community, and receiving positive feedback. Over time, these rewards could translate into tangible benefits, enhancing both user motivation and retention.

I believe the video creator community on this platform has strong potential to become both active and economically viable. As we will initially rely on external channels for visibility, a strong entry strategy would involve publishing videos on traditional web platforms, ensuring that Steem is visibly mentioned or credited, and then reposting the content on the Steem blockchain.

Another idea is to allow new users to join as invited guests. These temporary accounts would bypass the standard registration process and offer limited functionality, such as the ability to leave two comments. This approach could significantly reduce friction during onboarding and encourage more users to try the platform.

These ideas represent only the beginning, and the development path may evolve as we receive feedback and observe real user interaction. The core objective remains to build a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem for creators powered by Steem.

Delivery

The project will be developed and delivered according to the structured stages outlined in the proposal. Each stage will result in the release of functional features aligned with the overall roadmap. In addition, regular progress reports will be shared with the community to ensure full transparency and continuous engagement. These updates will include development milestones, newly completed features, and upcoming goals, helping the community stay informed and involved throughout the project's evolution.

Fair value assurance for SBD funding

In order to ensure fairness and protect the integrity of the funding process, I will follow a clear mechanism for handling SBD valuation fluctuations during the project.

The initial request is set to receive a fixed amount of SBD per day, regardless of its USD market value at the time of reception. However, in the event that the value of SBD significantly exceeds its intended $1 peg at the time of distribution, additional measures will be taken.

• If the SBD already received later appreciates in value after distribution (for example, rising to $4 USD), no retroactive adjustment will be made.
• However, if at the moment of distribution the SBD is already valued significantly above $1 USD, any amount exceeding the $1 value will be returned to the DAO. For example, if 1 SBD is received when its market value is $4 USD, I will sell it, retain $1 worth of value, and return the remaining $3 to the DAO.

This approach ensures that:

• The funding remains fair and consistent with the original budget intentions.
• The community is protected from overpayment due to market volatility.
• Project execution remains transparent and accountable to stakeholders.

Conclusion

In closing, SPEEM is designed not only as a platform but as a long-term investment in the Steem ecosystem. By promoting creativity, diversifying content formats, and building sustainable economic models, this project aims to support the growth, resilience, and broader adoption of Steem.
