The Greens, Too, Talk 🌿 One Picture – One Story
The Jade Plant stretched a little, its thick, glossy leaves reaching toward the hallway.
“Is she wheeling us out today...?” it asked, hopeful “... in her beloved tea trolley?”
“She might take us out today,” whispered the Gollum Jade, eyes on the door. “She’s had her tea. That’s usually a good sign.”
From the back, always poised and regal, the Snake Plant spoke in her tall, graceful voice.
“Maybe. Maybe not. She’s got that look in her eyes again, planning something... Oh no, her phone is ringing... I hope she doesn’t just leave us here.”
“I hope she doesn’t! Look, the sunshine is pooling in through the glass!” said the dreamy Blue Chalksticks, its cool-toned leaves shimmering faintly.
A bubbly giggle came from below.
“Well, sunshine never did hurt anyone!” chimed the Jelly Bean Plant, wiggling its plump, red-tipped leaves like excited fingers.
“There’s something thrilling about the outdoors, don’t you think?” mused the Ghost Plant, slightly powdered and ever poised, as if ready for a photoshoot.
“The butterflies, the buzzing bees, the wind telling stories…”
They all nodded. Even the shy Graptosedum, nestled in the corner, stretched a tiny rosette in agreement.
“I like watching the cats watching us… all kinds of them — orange, black, white...”
Then came the quiet voice of Haworthia, nestled between pots, always observant.
“Outdoors are great but I also enjoy the indoors. Don't we all? We hear her in the mornings,” it said. “Her footsteps always rushing…”
“Uth jao, phir sey late ho gae ho!” (“Wake up, you're late again!”)*
“Jaldi khana khao, late ho raha hai!” (“Eat quickly, you're getting late!”)
“Socks kahan hain?!” (“Where are your socks?!”)
And in nights, pitched in the Jade:
“Chalo bus ab so jao, bandd kro tv.” (“Alright, now go to sleep, turn off the TV”)
“lights off kro. Boht der ho gaee.” (“Turn off the lights. It's very late.”)
“Kuch chahiye khanay k liye, late night parhaiee kr rai ho.” (Do you need anything to eat? You’re studying late at night.”
The Snake Plant gave a wise smile.
“And then… when she talks to him, her voice changes. Softer. Slower.”
“Chai bana doon?” (“Shall I make you tea?”)
“Aaj kuch khaas banayein dinner mein?” (“Should we make something special for dinner today?”)
“Baitho thodi der… TV pr kuch daikhtay hein.” (“Come sit for a while… Let's watch something together. ”)
A tiny Paddle Plant, still trying to acclimatise in the bunch, beamed up.
“I love those days she sings,” it whispered. “She hums those cheesy movie songs and talks to herself while watering us.”
“Of course, other people are talking too... but it seems I'm listening to her only. Is that weird?”
“No,” the others said unanimously. “We listen to everyone — but you do have a favourite.”
They all swayed slightly as the trolley creaked. The hallway door opened, light spilled in, and one by one, they felt the warmth.
And she rolled them toward the sun-drenched veranda, the little cluster of leafy companions silently agreed:
Outside brings sun.
Inside brings soul...
This was one picture, one story, told through the language of my plants, for you. If I have written any names of plants incorrectly, please feel free to correct them...
@suboohi, this is a great contest. Keep it going. Many stories reach from people's hearts to pens through it!
P.S. While succulents make great indoor plants, they need a little sunshine every now and then.
You have very polite plants. I guess mine swear more and wish each other root rot. Or something ;-))
There's this side of them ;)))
Coming soon in our own dreamy land :)))
At least, the phone call u received didn’t make you ignore them. Now the plants feel fulfilled bringing them out to gain sunlight..
I love how creative you were with the stories. Is so beautiful.. best of luck in challenge.
I can multitask... ;)
Thank you so much for stopping by and giving it a read. :)))
Thanks for your participation. Best of luck for the contest.
