Is Poverty Man-made or Life Happens?

Greetings fellow Nigerians. Today, I'm participating in a contest by @bossj23 on the question "Is poverty manmade or life happens?". Scroll on to discover my opinion about this.

Is poverty and not having money the same thing? Explain.

They're not.

Poverty is a state of poor living due to unavailability of resources for basic comfort i.e. money. Not having money on the other hand means not being financially buoyant at a particular time. Poverty may be lifelong or generational but not having money is temporary. A person who does not have money today can have money tomorrow quite easily. A poor person will take gradual steps to be able to climb out of poverty.

Do you think poverty is manmade or situations in life make it happen? Mention two main causes of poverty in your country.

I think poverty is caused by certain situations in life. The two main causes of poverty in my country are lack of job opportunities and high cost of living.

In Nigeria, the labour force outnumbers the employment opportunities ten to one. There are so many people willing to work but the problem is they can't find jobs. It's situations like these that cause First-class graduates to drive tricycles in a bid to earn a living.
Secondly, even for fortunate citizens who find job opportunities, prices of staple commodities and literally everything in the market is increasing while salaries either reduce or remain constant. How is a citizen meant to overcome poverty with such external influences?

Give a life experience to justify that poverty is either manmade or situations in life cause it.

There's an old man in my street who was once a millionaire. He used to work for the previous governor (when he was much younger). He had saved millions from his well paying job hoping to start a business with it after his retirement.

That did not happen as he and his family were robbed after their house had been burgled into. Story has it that the armed men threatened to kill his wife had he not told them his bank account pin. That was the last time he was a rich man.

This happened a year to his retirement so as devastated as he was, it seemed be the end of his life. His children's school fees did not give him the opportunity to save anymore.

The old man retired with no property but his house. He has no source of livelihood and has fed his family and himself from hand to mouth ever since.

The oldman had planned his life out very intelligently. An unforeseen circumstance rose. That's the reason he's poor.

Someone refuses to scam people to elevate himself from poverty. Will you say the person is the reason he's still poor or will you say he's being content with poverty? Justify your answer.

I say the person is very contented even with poverty. The person's contentment can stop him from doing a bad thing in the society. That is rare and should be celebrated.

Despite the economic challenges in Nigeria, citizens can survive and thrive with creativity, resilience and the right economic strategies.

That's a rare case Sir

I totally agree with you that poverty can be caused by unforeseen circumstances and the story of the old man is a perfect example. It's also admirable that you highlighted the importance of contentment and integrity in the face of poverty.

Thank you for going through my post.
